If you’re going to spend a weekend in Rome, you will have the chance to visit a large part of the attractions that this wonderful city could offer you: let’s go and see what you could visit to enjoy your stay.
Weekend in Rome, first day: start from Via dei Fori Imperiali
Your first day of visit in Rome could start from ruines of Ancient Roma, in particular of the Imperial age. Walking along via dei Fori Imperiali you will be able to see a century and a half of history (from 46 b.C. to 111 a.C), whose evidences are the monumental squares dedicated to each imperor – the so-called Imperial Forums. The most important Fori are the ones of cesare, Augusto and Traiano: don’t forget visiting the Roman Forum, the old Republican Square, from which you can reach the Palatine.
Your visit to Rome must include a guided tour in the Colosseum, the roman Amphiteatre most famous in the world: maybe you’ll find very long lines to enter, but it’s really worth visiting. Moreover, the ticket for the Colosseum is good to visit the Palatine museum and the Roman Forum, so don’t miss this chance.
Leaving behind the Colosseum, on your left you will found Via della Domus Aurea: your next ancient Rome evidence is, in fact, the so-called Domus Aurea. It was built for a Nero’s will on the ashes of the great fire which destroyed Rome in 64 a.C. : it’s called Aurea (golden) because of the richness of its rooms and decorations. Pay attention to the day of visit – on Tuesday it’s closed.
Behind the Colosseum, at a few steps from the beginning of the Via Sacra (the one who leads to via dei fori imperiali), you will see a triumphal arch, built to celebrate the victory of the imperor Costantino over Massenzio in the Ponte Milvio’s battle.
Weekend in Rome, first day: finish at San Giovanni in Laterano’s Basilica
Going on with your walk in the history of Rome, you could visit one of the most important roman churches, the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano: in fact, it is the official holy see of the Pope in Rome, where he celebrates as the bishop of Rome.
Moreover, on this Square, in front of the church, there is one of the highest egyptian obelisk, rising 30 metres, in red granite.
The first day of your weekend in rome is about to finish, but don't forget to eat in a typical italian restaurant, in order to taste the original and famous italian food.
