Week End in Rome: Your Third Day in Rome
Sponsored links
During your weekend in Rome you could not miss a visit to one of the most beautiful chapels in Rome and the world, the Sistine Chapel. Let's start from the heart of Rome to arrive at Michelangelo's most famous artwork, which hits the viewers as an undertaking such as creation itself as they search the intricate frescoes above their heads.
Week End in Rome, Third Day: Start from Campo dè Fiori
If you passed the night in one of the hotels near Piazza Navona, the day after you can start your walk from here, especially from Campo dè Fiori. It is a small square which is famous for its markets and its bakeries. The wonderful smell of fresh pizza and pastries will surely lead there in the first hours of the morning. Behind Campo dè Fiori, be sure not to miss Piazza Farnese, the square which is famous for the palace that dominates it, built by Antonio da Sangallo and Michelangelo Buonarroti for the bishop Alessandro Farnese, and which is today the embassy of France. But your attention today will be focused entirely on the visit to one of the most famous chapels in the world, maybe the most famous: we are talking about the Sistine Chapel. If you want to rest before the healthy walk to San Pietro and the Vatican Museums, reach Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and at he bus stop called Chiesa Nuova take the bus number 40, which will cross the Tiber river and stop right in Castel Sant'Angelo. It was built in the 2nd century as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian and went on being used as an Imperial mausoleum until the time of Caracalla: in the 14th century it became a papal residence, as it is now. Ten minutes walk from Castel Sant'Angelo will take you in the biggest square in Rome, the most famous for religious believers in the world because of the Pope’s weekly speech. The Basilica of San Pietro is really full of attractions: your eyes could be attracted by Michelangelo's exquisite Pietà in the nave on the right, or the sculpture of Pope Clement XIII, or the bronze of St. Peter. There is more to see in Vatican City, than in many much larger countries.
Week End in Rome, Third Day: Finish at the Vatican Museums
Moreover, you cannot go away from Rome without having visited theVatican Museums, one of the biggest art collections in the world, since in it you will be able to see all of the art masterpieces collected over the centuries by the Popes. If you lift your eyes in the Vatican Museum , you will surely be enamoured by the Sistin chapel, painted by Michelangelo, and by the Papal rooms frescoed by Raphael. Unfortunately, you will not have too much time to visit all of the museum as they are very large and they demand a lot of time to be visited in a complete way. However, you could choose the Pinacoteca, the Egyptian Gregorian Museum, or the Pio-Clementino Museum. Last but not the least, don’t miss seeing the sunset from the dome of Saint Peter's. It is quite hard and tiring to climb the over 300 steps on a spiral staircase, but the landscape will be wonderful at that time.
