Viale Trastevere Rome: Urban features
Viale Trastevere is a big street of the homonymous district of Rome, located on the left bank of the Tiber.
During the August’s empire, Trastevere was outside the town and only towards the end of the Republican age it was included in Rome. In that period Tastevere was covered by new buildings and houses, that were assigned to workers and shopkeepers. At the beginning of the sixteenth century the district changed its aspect with the opening of two big avenues: one corresponding to via della Lungara and via della Scala and the other one to via della Lungaretta. In this way Trastevere was easily connected with the Vatican City, the historic centre of Rome. The S. Maria in Trastevere's Basilica, on which both streets converge, became its heart. With the passing of the years, Trastevere has preserved its original features, that is simplicity and authenticity that distinguished it from the rest of the town.
