Of course we recommend these Rome itineraries to those staying in Rome for relatively long periods, or to those who have visited the city more than once, and really want to know it in depth. For example you could visit the not as famous, but surely the just as wonderful unusual Rome on the last day of your week in Rome. From the Ara Pacis to the small neighborhood of Coppedè, suggestions and tips to visit an unusual Rome, with its hidden corners are listed below.
Unusual Rome: From the Ara Pacis to Villa Borghese
First of all, if you still haven’t visited it, the Ara Pacis (Altar of Peace) is a treasure from the reign of Augustus, in an airy glass-and-concrete building beside the eastern banks of the Tiber. In it you can visit the Museum of the Ara Pacis and take a look to the history and art books in the excellent bookshop housed in its interior. Heading out of the Ara Pacis, take Via di Ripetta (it runs parallel to Via del Corso) and in a few steps you will arrive at Piazza del Popolo. A long flight of steps will take you to the Pincio in lush Villa Borghese, one of the most famous and appreciated green areas in the Eternal City. The view of Rome from the Pincio Terrace is magnificent. After taking in the view you will be able to have a relaxing walk among the park's tall trees and its old collection of sculptures. Crossing Villa Borghese, and going towards Via Po, you will cross Viale Regina Margherita, the beginning of one of Rome's best kept architectural secrets.
Unusual Rome: The Coppedè Neighborhood
In this district, you will find a very strange and particular zone, called Coppedè, by the name of its creator, the architect Gino Coppedè, who planned it in the first decade of 1900. As he used to do, he mixed a lot of artistic styles in planning this area. In fact, in less than 40 buildings we can find Liberty, Art Decò, Baroque, Manierism, Medieval, and ancient Greek styles. Narrow streets and archs will charm you, as you realize that Rome also boasts wonderful examples of early 20th century architecture, and for a few short blocks resembles the Barcelona of Guadì. Not to miss is the enchanting Piazza Mincio, and you will be able to see the fantastic worlds that mingle in the city of Rome, from the ancient, to the medieval, to the Baroque, to the dawn of the modern epoque and beyond.
Unusual Rome: The E.U.R. District
The city of Rome also maintains an entire district inspired by the Facist rationalism that came with Benito Mussolini. The E.U.R. district, which stands for Esposizione Universale di Roma, or the Rome World's Fair, was meant to host the 1942 edition of this international event, which was cancelled after the explosion of the second world war. Nonetheless, it was completed, and is a unique example of modernist architecture from the 1930's. It includes such monuments as the Square Colosseum, the Church of Saint Peter and Paul, and the Palace of Cogresses. In some ways the entire area can be considered a modernist replica of the historic center of Rome. The area also hosts some important museums, such as the Museum of Roman Civilization, including the plastic scale model of the ancient city of Rome, and the National Museum of Popular Art and Tradition, which includes examples of the crafts and tradition behind what has evolved into today's Italian fashion and design.
