Rome Trastevere: Historic Attractions and Nightlife

Trastevere is one of the most charming places in Rome, a tangle of ancient narrow streets spaced out by enchanting squares. As a tourist or a Roman you should visit Trastevere if you love art and culture, if you like meeting a lot of people, or simply if you want to breathe in the air of the district which represents the Roman character in the most faithful manner. On this page you will be able to find ideas about where to eat, have a good time, and stay in Trastevere.

Rome Trastevere: By Day
Rome Trastevere is one of the richest Roman district to visit, at least in terms of its originality. It is pleasant to spend a day walking around its streets or enjoying Rome sightseeing coming down from the Janiculum Hill. But Trastevere is not made up of only squares, churches, and bridges. Walking among street artists, arches, and old workshops, you can also go shopping or just relax. Looking at the alleys and behind the building corners, you can run into elegant boutiques and perfumeries, bakeries, music shops, antique stores, ethnic products, bookshops with internet points, and fitness centers. On the page dedicated to shopping you can find some shops in Viale Trastevere suggested by our staff. Otherwise if you need ideas for a coffee, a tea or a quick snack, you can go to the Bar Berti, an historic coffee shop in Via Natale del Grande, where you will have a great choice of croissants and home made cakes: at the bar or outside, you can have breakfast or quick snacks, have a tea or a happy hour. Instead if you love Arabic food nearby there is Planet Kebab that offers classical kebab, felafel, cous cous and chicken curry, cakes such as sellu, containing sesame and almonds, and barbusa, containing coconut and vanilla.

Rome Trastevere: Meeting Places
A sofa with red cushions where you can rest and flip through books and magazines, enjoy  introductions, readings and meetings with authors: this is the Minimum Fax bookshop, a cultural corner that overlooks Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. If cinema is your passion you can stop at Libreria del Cinema, which started as a meeting place, and as a space for comparing ideas on film. Also furnished with a coffee shop, it is a fitting place for meetings, readings and viewings. You can rent DVDs, consult rare books in the original language, as well as access the internet. For book lovers in Via Bertani there is Gocce d’Inchiostro, a literary coffee bar specialized in children books and comics that organizes concerts, events and private parties. In the middle of Rome there is a space to keep fit. Trastevere Fitness organizes workouts, dance courses, martial art and  fitness activities too. There you can find beauty treatments, sweet perfumed massages such as those with chocolate, pepper or cinnamon. All of this with the beautiful backdrop of Trastevere.

 Rome Trastevere: By Night
Lively with a lot of nightclubs where you can have a nice time together with musical events and shows of any kind that characterize its squares, at night Rome Trastevere is a breeding ground tourists and people of any age. Neon signs switch on, streets fill up, the air is full of Roman flavor, the streets of the district, especially in the spring and summer seasons, become alive with passers-by and meeting points. So Trastevere becomes synonym of entertainment, an ideal place where it is possible to organize a party with your friends. First of all you can start by having a drink in one of the bars listed in Rome by Night, and then taste the original Roman cuisine in one of the several Trastevere restaurants we have selected.

If you want to feel the history and the traditional tastes of the Roman poetry of Trilussa and Belli you can eat at Tana de’ Noantri, otherwise if you prefer special atmospheres and different cooking styles, in Piazza San Calisto you’ll find the tavern Cave Canem. At the Akropolis in Via San Francesco a Ripa there are Antonis and the typical Greek meals just waiting for you. Nearby, you may meet one of the most famous Roman nightclubs, the Big Mama, where you can have a nice time listening to blues, jazz and rock music. On the contrary if you want to have a walk, your night may continue in Trastevere streets: pubs in Trastevere, cocktail bars, beer-houses, and so on until 2.00 o’clock. In Via del Moro, behind Piazza Trilussa, you’ll be captured by the Brazilian rhythm of the Bum Bum, where the funny Ana prepares abundant and tasty fruit cocktails. If you like malt or hop and you prefer the atmosphere of a pub, in Via Benedetta there is Ma Che Sete Venuti a Fà where Manuele, Fabio and Luca will share with you their immoderate passion for beer. In addition in Rome Trastevere you can have a midnight snack: a tasty Italian kebab at the Fame Nera or the typical take away of the giant slate in Via San Francesco a Ripa.

Rome Trastevere: How to Get There
Being a tourist destination and a central area of Rome Trastevere is subject to Roman traffic limitations to private cars. In Rome Trastevere there are many limited traffic areas (the so-called “ztl”) and streets forbidden to non-residents, while it is expected the payment of an hourly rate for the parking in blue areas. Moreover, because of its particular position, there aren’t railway or underground stops that arrive directly in the middle of the district: it is advisable to reach Trastevere by a Rome Taxi, or by the public transport, for example by tram number 8. The best way to get there however is on foot from the city center. Consult the web site of Atac to find more information on municipal laws regarding the blue lines and to know which public means reach Rome Trastevere.
