Via Nazionale: Historic Context
Via Nazionale is a big lively shopping street in Rome. The street also leads down to the Imperial Forum, Colosseum, and Trevi Fountain. This wonderful street allows you to walk through charming window shops and astonishing buildings. It was built by Pope Pius IX to connect Termini Station to the center of Rome. This street, in fact, was first called Via Pia, in his honor. In the nineteenth century the name was changed into Via Nazionale, and it became one of the most important streets in Rome when it became the capital of Italy in 1871. Most of the buildings on Via Nazionale date back to the 19th century, including the Exposition Palace. Other important historic buildings are the Koch Palace that today hosts the Bank of Italy, the Anglican church of Saint Paul's within the Walls, and the 4th century Basilica of San Vitale which sits at what was once street level. If you are in Termini Station you can even reach Via Nazionale on foot, cross Piazza della Repubblica and you will find yourself right in front of Via Nazionale and its shops.
