Piazza Navona is one of the most famous squares in Rome, together with Piazza di Spagna. This square is shaped like a a giant oval track. In fact, in this place there was Domiziano’s Stadium in the Imperial Age, and used for such spectacles as chariot races and mock naval battles. Piazza Navona is worth visiting especially for its fervent display of Baroque art, in the Church of S. Agnese in Agone and in the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers), symbol of the Roman Baroque and designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, representing the four corners of the Earth, with their respective rivers the Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Plate.
300 meters away, towards the Pantheon, you will see two more squares: Piazza Montecitorio, site of the Italian House of Commons and Piazza Colonna, where you will be able to see the Column dedicated to Marco Aurelio. Going on through Via dei Sabini, you will see the most famous fountain in Rome, the Trevi Fountain, the symbol of the Italian Dolce Vita, and famous also for the coins that tourists usually throw inside it to ward off ill-luck and ensure a trip back to Rome one day in the future.
Piazza di Spagna is a few steps away. You can rest on the Spanish Steps or do some shopping, window or real, in this area there are a lot of exclusive shops. Your shopping could go on to Via del Babuino, another important roman shopping street, and then arriving at Piazza del Popolo, with the Flaminio Obelisk, which rises to 24 meters in height. Piazza del Popolo is below the Pincio Hill, one of the most famous green areas in the Eternal City, and frequrented by both Romans and tourists alike.
