Are you going to land to Rome Airport? The Train could be the right solution to get into town. Is quick, frequent, easily accessible and not so expensive. If you want to get to and from Fiumicino by train, you can chose between the Leonardo Express , a direct non stop Rome airport train to and from Termini, the main transport hub in Rome city centre, and a cheaper alternative, a stopping train that runs more frequently and connects with the Rome Metro at Piramide and Tiburtina stations and with suburban trains at Ostiense. In this Rome-explorer.it article you will find some useful information to chose between Rome airport train Leonardo Express and on the other local Fiumicino train.
The Rome airport train: Leonardo ExpressThe Rome airport train, the Leonardo Express, is probably the best transfer, in terms of money and time, between Fiumicino and central Rome, namely Rome major train station, Termini. The service is a shuttle airport train and runs non stop, roughly every 31 minutes. From Termini this Rome airport train starts at 5:52 in the morning, with trains running at 22 and 52 minutes after the hour and ends at 22.52 (10:52pm). From Fiumicino, the train starts at 6:35 in the morning, with trains running at 5 and 35 minutes after the hour and ends at 23.35 (11:37pm). This train takes about 40 minutes to get to the airport. At Termini Station, the Rome airport train arrives and departs from platform 24, in a special area of the station, far from the other platforms, close to taxis, metro and the left luggage office. At Fiumicino, the station is part of the passenger terminal complex. The fare of this Fiumicino train is € 14.00 , it is not exactly cheap, but in the overall it is a very convenient solution to get into town easily, relatively comfortably and without splashing money on an expensive taxi. Remember that on this Rome airport train children under 12 travel free if accompanied by an adult.
The Rome airport train: local Fiumicino train
In addition to the Leonardo Express, there is another Rome airport train, a frequent local one which stops nearly at all Rome Train Stations, interchanging with the Rome Metro and other local trains, including ones that go into Termini Station in the centre. Key stations of this Fiumicino train are Tiburtina, Ostiense, Tuscolana (all Metro interchanges) and Trastevere. Ostiense is the nearest interchange with the Rome Metro and connections to Termini Station. This Rome airport train runs broadly every 15 minutes with variations according to time of the day and whether weekend or weekday. Depending on the station where you come on board, or you have to get off, journey time will be around 30 to 45 minutes. The first Rome airport train arrives at Fiumicino at 05:48 in the morning. Moneywise this option is cheaper, ticket price is € 8.00, and depending on your destination in Rome, journey time might not vary terribly much from the Leonardo Express. So our advice is, to check carefully before your arrival where your hotel is located and see what Rome railway station is closer to it, in order to chose the Rome airport train, which suits best!
