Mosaic is the art of creating images assembling small tiles of colored glass, stone, or other material. It’s an ancient form of art used for interior decoration or for cultural or spiritual significance. Ravenna, in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy, was once the center of late Roman mosaic art and still is one of the world’s main centers of learning of this fascinating art and Byzantine mosaics are one of the most recognized art styles. Mosaic schools are available in many cities of Italy. These courses are aimed to persons that want to produce artworks with this techniques and also to persons that want to specialize in the recovery and restoration of old and ancient mosaics.

Mosaic is an ancient form of art, but it’s still popular and still used to produce art works and for interior design. Gaudì used it to decorate the interior and exterior of many of his buildings in Barcelona. It’s at its heart a simple and effective art form.

In Rome and Italy there are many private and public schools that offer mosaic courses. Some schools offer crash courses less than a week long, others have study programs that span over several years. People come from all over the world to Italy to learn the secrets of the mosaic art. There is quite a big request of courses, workshops and training from the USA and Australia and from the major European countries like UK, France, Germany.

Opening a mosaic school is a good business opportunity. Many Italian and foreign entrepreneurs offer year long courses. Where possible, entrepreneurs try to offer all-inclusive packages: a mosaic course coupled with accommodation in a receptive structure like an “agriturismo” or bed and breakfast. Students can attend courses, visit the nearby towns and participate in organized trips to museums and other locations relevant for their studies. There is a strong request for holidays in Italy and Rome that couple time off and visits to picturesque locations of Italy with cultural activities like art courses. Mosaic courses are among the most requested kind of cultural holidays.

To open a school you need a place where hold lesson. This teaching space must have all the static documentation and document certifying that the building is fit for human habitation required by Italian laws. The school, being a business activity, must be registered with Rome’s Chamber of Commerce (or the Chamber of Commerce of the town where you open your school). Offices of the Chamber of Commerce will give you all the information required to know what the static regulations are, what documents you must have and the procedure for registering the school as a business activity. You can issue diplomas, but these are not recognized as valid according to Italian and international laws, unless you receive an authorization from the city’s Education Department. Notice that this doesn’t mean that you can’t open the school or request money for the teaching of the courses. It simply means that the diplomas you issue have no legal course.

After all the paperwork is set, you are going to need teachers. Mosaic teachers are easier to find that you may believe: just ask to other schools the names of their best students, or attend one of the trade shows dedicated to mosaics, like Tendenza Mosaico.
