Many foreign people come to Rome and Italy with the idea of making a living by teaching English, many more come to Rome wanting to learn Italian by living in the country. Language schools can be as simple as a group of people meeting in a living room, to advanced structures that offer to students learning facilities and accommodations. Opening a private language school in Rome is a viable business that can be put in place with just a few resources.

A private Italian language school can be recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education or not. Receiving recognition for your school allows you to issue diplomas and certificates that have a legal value. On the other hand, in order to obtain the Ministry of Education recognition, the private language school must satisfy an higher number of requisites.

To open a school you need a place where hold lesson. This teaching space must have all the static documentation and documents certifying that the building is fit for human habitation required by Italian laws. The school, being a business activity, must be registered with Rome’s Chamber of Commerce (or the Chamber of Commerce of the town where you open your school). Offices of the Chamber of Commerce will give you all the information required to know what the static regulations are, what documents you must have and the procedure for registering the school as a business activity.

A proper language school needs mother tongue teachers. In theory, everybody that knows the language can teach Italian, but for a successful school it’s better to employ professional teachers, possessing qualifications and certifications. The main certification to look for is the DITALS, a professional qualification for teachers of Italian as a foreign language.

You can issue diplomas and certificates, but these are not recognized as valid according to Italian and international laws, unless you receive an authorization from Rome's Education Department, that issues it on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Education. In order to know the latest regulations on obtaining public recognition for your private Italian language school, you should consult the relevant offices of the Education Department (Provveditorato agli Studi) and of the Municipality of Rome.
Notice that not having public recognition doesn’t mean that you can’t open the school or ask money for the teaching of the courses. It simply means that the diplomas you issue have no legal course.

In addition to the official recognition of diplomas and certificates by the Ministry of Education, many language schools are members of various international school association like AIL (Accademia Italiana di Lingua), ASILS (Association of language schools of Italian as a foreign language), ELITE (European Federation of Associations for Teaching Mother Tongues), FIYTO (Federation of International Youth Travel Organizations, ALTO (Association of Language Travel Organisations).

Where possible, schools try to offer all-inclusive packages: an Italian language course coupled with accommodation in a receptive structure. Students can attend courses, visit the city and participate in organized trips to museums and other locations relevant for their studies. There is a strong request for holidays in Italy and Rome that couple time off and visits to picturesque locations of Italy with cultural activities like a language course. Some schools couple Italian language lessons with courses on other aspects of Italian culture, like art or cooking.

Lastly, a few Italian language schools, like English schools, offers franchising plans for people wanting to open a language school benefitting from their already established name and teaching resources.
