Italian University: University study
University studies in Italy follow the upper secondary school and are provided by universities, university institutes, polytechnic institutes, schools for interpreters and translators, schools of psychotherapy, schools for archivists and experts in palaeography and diplomacy, accademies and training institutions in the field of commerce, technology, fashion, design, music, industry.

According to the 1999 reform, Italian university studies are organised on 3 cycles. The first cycle includes first degree courses, while the second cycle includes Specialization studies and masters. A third cycle gathers postgraduate studies consisting of the following typologies of degree courses: research doctorate programmes, 2nd level specialization courses and 2nd level university master degree courses.

Italian University: Different Types of Degrees
There are four main qualifications students may take in Italian university: a university diploma (diploma universitario), a bachelor of Arts/Science (diploma di laurea), Research Doctorate (dottorato di ricerca), a Specialization Diploma (diploma di specializzazione). The  university Diploma is the equivalent to a baccalaureate course. It is considered a first level academic degree. It lasts between 2 and 3 years and focuses on different vocational competences, scientific methods and contents. Sometimes faculties restrict the admission to courses through a test. The 1st degree is awarded to undergraduates who have gained 180 credits.

A Bachelor of Art/Science represents the second level degree. It takes 4-6 years to be completed. A dissertation is compulsory. The final degree, 2nd degree, is awarded to graduates who have an amount of 300 credits.

Access to some 2nd degrees (dentistry, human medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy,  and architecture) requires a secondary school diploma or a foreign equivalent, they last 5 years, except for medicine which lasts 6 years.

Italian High School: Research Doctorates
The Research Doctorade is a post-graduate qualification. Its goal is to provide students with a scientific approach and methodology. During the course, which lasts 3-4 years, students’ achievements are noted on a report. Researches, articles and a final dissertation are part of the training. The Specialization Diploma is restricted to university graduates. It lasts 2-3 years and consists of vocational experiences and a final written dissertation. Credits are to be 300/360, including those of the first degree.

Italian University: Masters' Degrees
Finally a university master focuses on scientific or higher educational studies. It lasts a minimum of a year and allows students to earn 60 credits.
