Education Italy: Prmary School in Italy
The Italian education system comprises two main cycles. The first cycle is compulsory and lasts for 8 years. In Italy there are 5 years of primary school and three years of first grade or lower secondary school. As regards the Italian primary school you should know that it is compulsory after kindergarten. At primary school in Italy children learn to read and write, they also study several subjects such as basic mathematics, geography, Italian, English, science, music, information technology, religion (optional) and social studies. Once there was a single teacher, today a modular approach prevails. There is a teaching team of three or four teachers specialized in different areas, such as the linguistic, scientific and anthropological fields.

Education Italy: Secondary School in Italy
The following step for a student is to attend a secondary school. Italian secondary school is distinguished into a lower and  an upper secondary school. The lower secondary schools, also called middle school, have wide training purposes and involve a great variety of subjects, focusing both on literary studies and sciences: it should prepare students for upper secondary education. Grammar schools, secondary schools focusing on sciences, human sciences school, language high school, art school or technical schools and other options are at the disposal of students who want to take a secondary school diploma. In Italy these are called Lyceum, from the acient Latin word for a hall for public lectures.

The latter is obligatory if you want to enter any Italian university. Italian high education has been recently reformed and made to be on the same level as other European degree courses. A university curriculum can be organized on the basis of the three cycles of Italian university courses. Masters, specializations and doctorades are also included in Italian educational system.

Education Italy: Other Things to Know
The education system is quite different than the education system in the United States. There are anumber of fundamental differences that you should know before you start taking too much for granted. For example, some Italian schools require students to attend six days a week, with students getting out of school much earlier than you would normally think everyday. Also, there is virtually no physical education or extracurriculur athletic activities, not even in high school, so if you want your child to play sports, you will have to take them to a separate sport center in the afternoons.
