A day trip from Rome is a wonderful opportunity to see the historic and artistic treasures in the immediate surroundings of the Eternal City. There are in fact an incredible number of interesting sites to choose from, including Ostia Antica, the ancient Roman port town, with its ruins of a glorious past, or Tivoli, with its collection of parks and villas in the hills mmediately to the east of Rome. Let's take a closer look and see what exactly can be visited on a day trip from Rome, taking a deep breath of fresh country air just outside  of the chaos that generally characterizes much of Rome.

A Day Trip from Rome: The Ancient Port of Ostia
At the ruins of the ancient town of Ostia you will be able to visit what was once the vibrant port city of ancient Rome. Ostia Antica was also very important in the medieval age because of its strategic position at the mouth of the Tiber River, as well as its proximity to important salt flats. From the ancient village you can visit the very large archeological area, and we suggest you to take a map, in order not to get lost as the site is very large. The theatre is the most spectacular building, built in 12 B.C., and at the moment the structure is still used as a theatre during the summer months. Ostia is reachable by train, taking the line called “Lido” which runs from the Ostiense Station (Rome Metro Line A: Piramide).

A Day Trip from Rome:The Villas of Magical Tivoli
Tivoli is a city perched on a hillside to the east of Rome, with a wonderful medieval historic center, with its churches and two wonderful Unesco World Heritage Sites, Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana, both of which are located in the town. Just off of Tivoli's main piazza, Villa d’Este is a unique masterpiece of the Italian garden, which knows few rivals for its beauty, position, and its seemingly unending series of dancing fountains. Just below the Medieval town, Villa Adriana was the Imperial residence built for the Emperor Hadrian from 118 and 138 A.D., and is a rare example of Roman architecture, and the best preserved ancient Roman villa in the world. You can reach Tivoli from the bus/tube stop of Ponte Mammolo, take the bus Co.Tral L0001 or L0002 or L0006 until Tivoli. By car, take the A24 motorway Roma-L’Aquila-Teramo until Tivoli exit.

A Day Trip from Rome: Orvieto and Its Cathedral
Just under an hour from Rome by train, you will be able to visit the fantastic Medieval hill-town of Orvieto in the region of Umbria. Orvieto is most famous for hosting one of the most beautiful cathedrals, the Duomo of Orvieto, in all of Italy, rivaled mainly by that of Siena. Orvieto, like the rest of Umbria is also famous for its ceramics, and fine food and wine. There are also a number of music festivals that take place in Orvieto, perhaps the most famous of which is the winter edition of Umbria Jazz. You can reach Orvieto from Rome's Termini Station on tains that leave every two hours, so check times if you happen to be near the station, or consult Trenitalia.
