With more than 5 million passengers every year, Ciampino Airport is the second largest airport in Rome, the largest one is Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino. Below you can read a description of the Ciampino Airport, a brief history and logistical information about its location.

Ciampino Airport: Description
GB Pastine, better known as the Ciampino Airport, with more than 5 million passengers per year, is the second largest airport in Rome, thelargest is Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino. It is mainly dedicated to charter flights and low cost airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, Centralwings and Wizz Air. The Rome Ciampino airport has got only one terminal and it is also an important military base. It is considered a very safe airport for the most part by  the tourists who come to visit Rome.

Ciampino Airport: History

Pastine was the main airport in Rome until the sixties. Soon after Leonardo Da Vinci airport was constructed, the Ciampino Airport was mainly used for military flights and charter flights. The Ciampino Airport is 15 kilometers from the city center and in spite of common myths and the way it is referred to,  Ciampino Airport is territorially located in Rome and closer to the city than its international counterpart. To be so close to Rome has been an important motive in its development. Since 2001, the number of flights  has increased fourfold.

Rome Ciampino Airport is still a military base and so it is one of the preferred airports in terms of security by tourists and heads of government. In 2004 legal proceedings started  between the municipality on one side and Enac and  Adr on the other. In 2007 the Ministry of Transportation established the limiting  of the  further development of Ciampino Airport and decided instead for a reduction in the number of flights. In the meantime, the minister decided for the construction of a third airport in Rome, where some low cost flights should be moved. The established location is Viterbo, but the works to be carried out have not started yet. The first of November 2007 a reduction in the number of the low cost flights took place as a result of the order issued by Enac, which provided for a reduction of the numiber of flights from 138 to 100 per day. Now the daily flights in Ciampino airport are below the limit required by Enac and as a consequence there was a sensible reduction in flights and passengers in 2007.
