Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor, reads mysterious texts by Galileo and John Milton and identifies four altars of science, representing the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water, each corresponding to a precise place where captured cardinals are being sacrificed: these are the main clues that once cleared up will allow him to foil a deadly attack on the Catholic Church lead by a terrorist who has stolen a nuclear bomb.

- St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in Christendom, one of the holiest sites in Christianity that contains St. Peter’s tomb, showed prominently in the movie,
- and the Sistine Chapel, where visitors can admire the most beautiful collection of frescoes by Michelangelo, that worked four years to finish the ceiling.
