1 Week in Rome: All That Is Genuinely Rome

If you have dedicated at least an entire week to Rome, you will have the luxury of taking time out from the rush from one historically significant place to the next in order to see what the pleasures of daily life in the Eternal City are like, and all of the idiosyncrasies that make Rome such a unique and timeless place. Images of family life come to mind, open-air markets, the small back-streets of the historic center, and the local character of the Romans themselves.

1 Week in Rome: Starting From Testaccio
Let’s start from Testaccio, an area with roots in the Ancient Roman Age as a specialized dumping ground. It is built on many tidy layers of terracotta amphoras which arrived in the Caput Mundi from all over the Mediterranean world fom the river port on the Tiber, originally holding such ancient commodities as grain, olives, wine, and oil. Now a very popular area, it has always been the ideal place to take a walk, explore with friends, and now it is important for fun and culture. There are a lot of typical restaurants- called hostarias and fraschette – worthy to visit if you want to try the best in Roman cuisine. Don’t forget to visit the popular music School of Testaccio (scuola popolare di musica del testaccio) and the former slaughterhouse, which now hosts one of the sites of the MACRO , the Museum of Contemporary art of Rome. In Piazza dell’Emporio, in the middle of Testaccio and the traffic jam, your attention will be caught by a strange heap of terracotta vases, a fountain, the symbol of Testaccio and of its history (in fact, the word Testaccio comes from the latin “Testae”, the word for terracotta).

1 Week in Rome: Finish in Trastevere
Another popular area of Rome is Trastevere, from the latin “Trans – Tiberim”, that means over the Tiber River. It was born as a poor area, almost isolated from the rest of the city. Nowadays it is the symbol of Rome, Romans and genuine everyday life in the Eternal City. One of the most beautiful things to see is the oldest  part of the Trastevere district, a labyrinth of paths and alleys with a lot of very small squares, among these, Piazza Trilussa, from the name of the most famous Roman poet, who wrote in Roman dialect. Before going to eat in one of the most characteristic and greedy hostarias and restaurants of this area, we suggest you to take a walk and go to Via di Santa Sabina, crossing the Sublicio  bridge. It is amazing to see the sunset on the Tiber River and Trastevere from the Orange Garden. Once it was a part of Domenican monks’ vegetable plot, but the view from its walls and trees is really wonderful. For your night in Trastevere, you have an embarrassing wealth of options! Restaurants, inns and pub are so full of life and fun that you won’t be able to go away from this district!
